Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a predicted structure variable through a simple arithmetic operation, and to further change the predicted structure precisely by adpatively varying a reference frame interval, and determining the reference frame interval according to the output of a prediction efficiency calculating circuit.
SOLUTION: In a prediction efficiency calculating circuit 12, prediction efficiency in an encoded frame is calculated from information outputted from a moving vector detecting circuit 3, and to be used by an encoding mode judging circuit 4. In a reference frame interval decision circuit 13, a reference frame interval is determined from the prediction efficiency calculated by a prediction efficiency calculating circuit 12 and an encoding mode determined by the encoding mode judging circuit 4, and a picture re-arrangement control circuit 2 is controlled. The picture re-arrangement control circuit 2 reads coded from a frame memory 1 in an order designated by the reference frame interval decision circuit 13. When an inter-frame prediction error is large, the time interval of the reference frame is reduced, and the prediction efficiency is improved resulting in the improvement of picture quality.
