To provide a double link type variable compression ratio engine capable of enhancing a mechanical compression ratio and of strengthening a squish flow, in an operation area where combustibility becomes unstable.
This engine 1 forms a combustion chamber 2 of an inner wall of a cylinder head 10 and a crown surface 11a of a piston 11 reciprocating in a cylinder 12, and has the piston 11 having an opposed surface opposed to the inner wall of the cylinder head 10 on the inner diameter peripheral edge of the cylinder 12, a clearance adjusting means for adjusting strength of the squish flow generated in the combustion chamber 2, by adjusting the clearance between an under surface of the cylinder head 10 and the opposed surface of the piston 11, by changing a top dead center position of the piston 11, and an operation control means for performing low load operation control or high load operation control on the basis of a load of the engine 1. In the low load operation control, the clearance is reduced more than the high load operation control, and the mechanical compression ratio is enhanced, and the squish flow is strengthened.
