PURPOSE: To provide an RGB-UV laser which is inexpensive, further miniaturized, more efficient than a device to use bulk crystal or fibers, since a compact and inexpensive thin-film device is provided by using up-conversion materials in the form of a thin film.
CONSTITUTION: A multi-wavelength up-conversion waveguide laser for generating radiation of visible or ultraviolet wavelengths is composed of a semiconductor laser diode 6 for generating the radiation of comparatively long wavelength, channel waveguide 4 having the thin-film material for converting this radiation of comparatively long wavelength to the radiation of visible or ultraviolet wavelengths, and optical resonator for recirculating the radiation of visible or ultraviolet wavelength. The optical resonator can use optical emission coating 10 or more than one Bragg grating reflectors as the emission couplers. More than one optical resonators can be used for generating more than one visible or ultraviolet wavelengths. More than one independently controllable optical wave modulators are used for modulating the visible or ultraviolet wavelength radiation.
