PURPOSE: To provide a multichannel head assembly, eliminating the necessity of forming servo information at the lower layer of a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic recording medium applied to this head assembly.
CONSTITUTION: This head assembly is provided with a supporting base 12, which is provided with a servo-writing converter 14, a servo-erasing converter 16 and reading converters 24, 26, 30, 34, 38 and 42, and writing converters 22, 32 and 40. This servo-erasing converter 16 is provided with alternately positioned plural erasing parts 18 and non erasing parts, and when the magnetic recording medium 44 is carried in the direction of an arrow, uniform signal patterns are recorded in the servo section of the medium 44 by the converter 14 and the signal pattern is periodically erased by the converter 16.
