PURPOSE: To produce a multicolored ornament excellent in resistance to wear and corrosion with a simple technique by forming a carbon hard layer on the surface of the ornament base material, removing a part of the layer and then forming the layer of a metal plating, a coating, a cloisonne, etc., in the cavity.
CONSTITUTION: An intermediate layer 2 of Si, SiO2, Ge, TiN, TiC, TiCN, WC, etc., is formed on the surface of a stainless steel member 1 as the ornament base material, and a carbon hard layer 3 is formed thereon by CVD, PVD method, etc. A part of the carbon layer 3 and intermediate layer 2 is removed by a laser beam 4, and the plating layer of groups IVa, Va and VIa metals, their nitride, carbide, carbonitride and carbonitroxide, metals such as Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt, Au and Ag and their alloy, a coating, cloisonne, etc., are formed in the cavity as the layer 5. A multicolored ornament is easily produced in this way without the need for a troublesome procedure such as masking.
