PURPOSE: To provide the improving agent which has excellent oxidation resistance and dispersibility and improves the viscosity index of lubricating oil by introducing a monomer having an ethylenic unsatd. part and an epoxy group into a polymer having a C-C skeleton.
CONSTITUTION: The polymer having the C-C skeleton, such as ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-propylene-dienta-terpolymer and the monomer having the ethylenic unsatd. group and epoxy group of the formula (C=C is an ethylenic unsatd. double bond; RV to RVI are each a bivalent hydrocarbon group selected from alkylene, alkalylene, alalkylene, cycloalkylene, arylene; R' is H, alkyl, alkalylene, cycloalkyl, aryl; R" is a bivalent group selected from -COO-, RV-; (a) is ≥0; (b), (d) are each 0 to 1; () is 1 to 3) are brought into graft reaction in an inert atmosphere in the presence of a free group initiator, by which the multifunction viscosity index improving agent consisting of the polymer compsn. having the C-C skeleton and the epoxy group suspended from the skeleton is obtd.
