PURPOSE: To produce the subject high-strength product having a bright appearance such as a liner board by impregnating a ply of deinked old newsprint substantially free of fines, etc., with a specific dry-strength additive and joining the ply of the impregnated newsprint to a ply of cellulosic fibers.

CONSTITUTION: A ply of deinked old recycled newsprint substantially free of fines and short fibers having <50 μm length is impregnated with a dry-strength additive such as starch having the ability to increase the internal strength of the ply itself and to improve the bond state between the plies. The ply of the old newsprint is then joined to a ply of cellulosic fibers to produce a multiple ply paper product.
