Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a mutant strain of Phaffia rhodozyma, composed of a mutant strain capable of producing carotenoids corresponding any biosynthetic precursors of astaxanthin and capable of efficiently producing β-carotene or echinenone in high selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: A mutant strain which is a mutant strain of Phaffia rhodozyma capable of mainly producing carotenoids of any biosynthetic precursors of astaxanthin in which any of the biosynthetic pathways leading to astaxanthin are cut off or damaged. Furthermore, carotenoids composed of β-carotene or echinenone are preferred as the precursors. The carotenoids are obtained by culturing the mutant strain.
