PURPOSE: To provide a novel compound useful as a herbicide for weeds of a soybean plant field, etc., particularly as a selective herbicide for monocotyle donous weeds.
CONSTITUTION: A desired compound is represented by formula I (wherein R is methyl or ethyl; and Het is oxazolyl, thiazolyl or the like) and is, e.g. N-(4- fluorophenyl)-N-methyl-2-(3-chloro-1,2,4-thiadiazol-5-yloxy)-acetamide. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a heterocyclic compound of the formula: Het-X (wherein X is a halogen or alkylsulfonyl) with N-(4-fluorophenyl)- hydroxyacetamide of formula II, optionally, in the presence of an acid acceptor and a catalyst, in a solvent at -50-110°C. The compound is useful in controlling the weeds belonging to the Digitaria, the Poa annua, the Setaria viridis, etc.
