NEW MATERIAL:An N-acyl-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine shown by formula I (n is 8W16) and a salt thereof.
EXAMPLE: N-Lauroyl-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine.
USE: Useful as a surface active agent having surface active ability of improved hard water resistance and improved low irritation and also useful as a detergent for hair and skin for infants and children, as a kitchen detergent for housewives likely to have chapped hands, daily shampoo for people washing hair every day, etc. Preferably usable as low-irritation shampoo for hairdressing and beauty culture.
PREPARATION: A fatty acid chloride shown by formula II is reacted with an N-(2-hydroxypropyl)glycine shown by formula III in the presence of a base to give a compound shown by formula I. The compound shown by formula II, for example, is obtained by synthesis from a corresponding fatty acid and phosphorus trichloride and the compound shown by formula III is obtained from monoisopropanolamine and sodium monochloroacetate.
