PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound exhibiting both optical and physiological activities, useful as a monomer to be used as a starting material of polymers expected to have characteristics such as liquid crystal property, biocompatibility, biodegradability, etc.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by the formula [X is an amino acid residue such as of methionine, (side chain-protected) aspartic acid, or (side chain-protected) serine; R1 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon group such as methyl], e.g. N-methacryloyl-L-aspartic acid-α,β-dimethyl ester. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting a compound of the formula H-X-OR1 with methacryloyl chloride in a solvent such as aqueous solvent, halogenated hydrocarbon solvent, or aprotic polar solvent, in the presence of a base such as triethylamine as a catalyst, at -20 to 40°C.
