Abstract:

To obtain the subject new low-viscosity compound, represented by a specific formula, capable of manifesting a high Δn and further the anisotropy of a high permittivity and useful for increasing the anisotropy of the refractive index of a liquid crystal material by mixing thereof with the material.

This compound is represented by the formula (R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-12C alkyl), e.g. N-phenyl-3-phenyl-3-hydroxy-2-propylene-1-imine. Furthermore, the compound is preferably obtained by removing ethanol from, e.g. a 4-alkylacetophenone (e.g. 4-ethylacetophenone) and ethyl formate in the presence of an alkaline catalyst such as sodium hydride, providing β- formylacetophenone and then reacting the resultant compound with aniline.
