Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide the subject film consisting of a specific liquid crystal polymer having positive refractive index anisotropy along with giving nematic phase, with the optical axis inclined at a specific angle to the film surface, capable of giving liquid crystal displays of excellent angle-of-visibility characteristics.

CONSTITUTION: The objective film consisting of a straight chain or cyclic side chain-type liquid crystal polymer having positive refractive index anisotropy, giving nematic or smectic phase, and having, on average, 4-10000 units of formula I (A is of formula II or III; where, in the formula II, Si-O is the main chain in the formula I, and, in the formula III, C-CH2 is the main chain in the formula I and COO is located on the side of non-R1; R1 is H, phenyl, etc., when A is of the formula II, being H or 1-6C alkyl, when A is of the formula III; k is 2-10; m and p are each 0 or 1; Ar1 and Ar2 are each 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexane, etc.; L is COO, CH=N, etc.; R is H, halogen, etc.). In this film, the optical axis is inclined at an elevation of 10-80° to the film surface.
