PURPOSE: To accurately perform the area identification even for an original with poor quality.
CONSTITUTION: A counter 3 prepares a histogram based on the density level of the picture element of the prescribed line at the beginning of the original. Based on this histogram, the threshold values of a dot/character identification circuit 10a and a picture/character identification circuit 10b are set. Dot/ character characteristic amount extraction circuit 9a or a picture/character characteristic amount extraction circuit 9b performs the characteristic amount extraction according to the picture data based on the decision result of an original mode decision circuit 7. The corresponding the dot/character identification circuits 10a or the picture/character identification circuit 10b compares the extraction characteristic amount with the threshold value, deciding the area identification.
