PURPOSE: To provide compounds useful as intermediates of bactericides by reacting arylbenzyl ethers represented by specified formulae with a carboxylic halide or the like in the presence of an acid or a diluent.
CONSTITUTION: By reacting an arylbenzyl ether of formula I (wherein R represents H, a halogen, cyano, 1-4C alkyl or the like; X represents CH2, CH-CH3 or the like; Y represents O2, sulfur, direct bond or the like; (m) is 0 to 3; R1 represents H or a 3-5C alkenyl; R2 represents cyano or halogen; R3 represents 1-12C alkyl, 1-12C halongenoalkyl or the like) with carboxylic halide of the formula R3-CO-halogen or carboxylic anhydride of the formula R3-COO-CO-R3 in the presence of an acid (e.g. trifluoromethane sulfonic acid, methane sulfonic acid) and a diluent (e.g. pentane, hexane) at a temperature of -80 to 140°C, the aimed compound of formula II is provided.
