Abstract:
PURPOSE:To afford superior adhesion, heat resistance, and mechanical characteristics to optical fiber by using a resin consisting primarily of polycarbonate as a core material and a resin compsn. contg. a specified perfluoroacetone structure unit and having >=2 melt index as a shell material. CONSTITUTION:Polycarbonate is used for the core material and a resin compsn. contg. >=1wt% and <=30wt% perfluoroacetone structure unit expressed by the formula I and having >=2 melt index is used for the shell material. The resin to be used for the shell material has smaller refractive index and higher transparency than the resin used for the core material. Suitable shell material having sufficiently small refractive index, superior mechanical characteristics, and satisfactory adhesion to the core material is copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with hexafluoroacetone, copolymer of vinylidene fluoride/tetrafluoroethylene/ hexafluoroacetone, etc. By this constitution, optical fiber having satisfactory adhesion, superior light transmitting characteristics, resistance to heat and moisture, mechanical characteristics, and high numerical aperture is obtd.
