PURPOSE: To obtain the new compound useful as an angiotensin II receptor antagonist or antihypertensive agent and also useful for the treatment of renal damage by a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I {R1 is CO2H, SO2H, PO3H2 or the like; R2 is H, OH, -OCOCH3, halo, 1-4C alkyl or the like; R3 is formula II {R4 is -CH(R6)R7 [R6 is -(CH2)pR1 (p is 0 to 4) or the like; R7 is 4-9C alkyl or the like] or the like; R5 is H, 1-5C alkyl, 1-5C trifluoroalkyl or the like} or the like; X is (CH2)mCONH- (m is 0 or 1), -CH2- or the like}, e.g. 1-[1- oxo-2-[5-[2-(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)phenyl]-1H-benzimidazole-1-yl]octyl]-4-cis-(4- carboxymethylphenoxy)-L-proline is prepared from the compound of formula III (R22 is Br, I or the like; R19 is indole protecting group) as a starting material.
