Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject catalyst, useful as a raw material, an intermediate, etc., for medicines, biochemical reagents, etc., by reacting a specific acylthiosialic acid derivative with an alkali metallic alkoxide, converting the derivative into an alkali metallic salt and further reacting the resultant alkali metallic salt with an alkyl halide.
CONSTITUTION: An acylthiosialic acid derivative represented by formula I (either of R6 and R7 denotes COOCH3 group and the other denotes SCOOCH3 group) is reacted with an alkali metallic alkoxide (e.g. sodium methoxide) to provide an alkali metallic salt represented by formula II [either of R4 and R5 denotes COOCH3 group and the other denotes SM (M is an alkali metal)], which is then reacted with an alkyl halide (e.g. methyl iodide) to afford the objective sialic acid derivative, represented by formula III [either of R1 and R2 denotes COOCH3 group and the other denotes SR3 (R3 denotes a lower alkyl)] and useful as a raw material and an intermediate for mediaines, biochemical reagents, etc.
