PURPOSE: To obtain a recording image of good quality regardless of the kind or surface state of an image receiving material by heating a dyeing layer transfer material in a region having a size larger than that of a dyeing layer and smaller than that of a release layer by a dyeing layer transfer means to form the dyeing layer on an intermediate medium.
CONSTITUTION: A thermal head 1 is pressed to the surface layer 3 of a support drum 1 while a current is supplied to the thermal head 1 to heat the same and the support drum 2 is rotated to form a dyeing layer 9 on the surface layer 3 while a dyeing layer transfer material 10 is taken up by a taking-up roller 12. The dyeing layer transfer material is heated by the thermal head 1 so that the size of the heating area thereof is larger than that of the dyeing layer 9 and smaller than that of a release layer 25. By this constitution, a dyeing layer transfer substrate 7 and the surface layer 3 are not strongly bonded by the heat and pressure of the thermal head 1 and the dyeing layer transfer material 10 is stably and quietly taken up by the taking-up roller 12.
