Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce the compound useful as a foaming agent for urethane foam, aerosol propellant and cleaning agent for electronic circuit board, etc., in a high efficiency by reacting vinylidene chloride with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of water and a metal fluoride.

CONSTITUTION: The compound is produced by reacting vinylidene chloride with hydrogen fluoride in the presence of steam and a bivalent or trivalent metal fluoride (e.g. aluminum fluoride or chromium fluoride) at 70-300°C. The molar ratio of vinylidene chloride to hydrogen fluoride is 1:(1-12), the amount of water is 0.5-20vol.% in terms of steam based on hydrogen fluoride and that of the metal fluoride is ≥1wt.% based on vinylidene chloride. Vinylidene chloride used as a raw material is reacted at essentially 100% conversion and there is little production of l-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane as a by-product.
