PURPOSE:To promptly update a picture at the time of displaying a four-picture by providing a means to change the number of cross directional display picture elements, and a means to change a display start position according to a case whether reduced display is executed or the reduced display is not executed. CONSTITUTION:When the reduced display is designated with a keypad 10, a display start position setting means 62 is controlled by a microprocessor circuit 2, and the display start position is set. Next, a display picture element number setting means 63 is controlled, and the number of the cross directional display picture elements is set to 256 picture elements. The microprocessor circuit 2 selects selected character program data, reduces and decodes a conventional character graphic picture having longitudinal directional 204 picture elements and cross directional 248 picture elements into a character graphic picture having longitudinal directional 102 picture elements and cross directional 128 picture elements using a first reducing means 12, a second reducing means 13, a third reducing means 14, a first character generator 9, and a second character generator 11, and decodes the character graphic picture in a display memory 7. Thus, it becomes unnecessary to execute 4-dot shift processing by the microprocessor circuit, and time for updating the picture at the time of the four-picture display can be shortened.
