PURPOSE: To use a device for varying the direction of advance of a traveling band- shaped material to advance the band-shaped material on guide rollers and smoothly in position on a normal spiral curve.
CONSTITUTION: Band steel plates are radially mounted throughout the outer peripheral surface of a cylindrical member 16 to which a cone frame 6 is secured, in such a manner as to keep a predetermined distance to an imaginary conical surface 1, and a plurality of guide rollers 4 are arranged on the surface of each of the band steel plates. The direction of advance of the band steel plates 5 is varied as they move along a conical curved surface that the enveloping surfaces of the guide rollers 4 form. As the band steel plates 5 are displaced toward the large-diameter side portion of the imaginary conical surface 1, the laser beam of a laser beam sensor 23 is applied to the surface of the end portion of each band steel plate 5, so the distance measured by the sensor is decreased and the displacement of each band steel plate 5 is detected. Then both of hydraulic cylinders 22 are operated at a predetermined stroke and a push roll 21 is pressed against the edge portion of each band steel plate 5 so that the band steel plates 5 are moved toward the small-diameter side portion of the imaginary conical surface 1 and returned onto a normal spiral curve.
