Abstract:

PURPOSE: To graft a preformed hydrophilic org. polymer onto a substrate of hydrophobic org. polymer or polyorganosiloxane and to form a coating which is made unremovable by washing the substrate with water.

CONSTITUTION: A surface of a substrate is exposed to an aq. solution of a hydrophilic polymer in the presence of a solubilized compd. of tetravalent cerium. This exposing condition is sufficient to graft at least part of the hydrophilic polymer onto the surface of the substrate.
