PURPOSE: To provide a floppy disk device capable of surely causing to perceive sensitively the condition of a protect notch as the difference in the sense of resistance applied on user's fingers at the time of insertion of a floppy disk.

CONSTITUTION: A detecting part for disk condition 10 optically detects whether the protect notch 8 of a floppy disk 7 to be inserted is in a write enable condition of write disable condition. In the write enable condition, a controller 13 controls a controlling part for inserting a disk 14 so as to give a resisting force for disk insertion by means of protect notch information from the detecting part for disk condition. Then, when the floppy disk is pulled out or is inserted against the resisting force, the resisting force is eliminated. Thus, the user axactly perceives the condition of the floppy disk by the sense of resistance imparted on the fingers that inserts the floppy disk and correctly understands and recognizes a confirmation message for file presavation and control displayed later.
