PURPOSE: To simplify the manufacturing work of a magnetic recording medium and, at the same time, to reduce the manufacturing cost of the medium by simplifying and miniaturizing the manufacturing device.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of artificial grid layers 21 constituting a vertical magnetized film is formed on a substrate 15 and a metallic layer is formed between each layer 21. The layers 21 have different coercive forces, because the distances from the layers 21 to the substrate 15 are different from each other. Therefore, when the intensity of a magnetic field is changed, the intensity of magnetization of the vertical magnetized film changes, because the number of the layers 21 which are inverted in magnetization changes due to the difference between the coercive forces. The layers 21 are formed of Pd and Co (or Pt and Co) and the layer 22 is formed of Pd (or Pt). When the thickness of at least one layer 21 is changed from that of the other layer 21, the intensity of magnetization can be changed more largely, because the coercive force can be changed further.
