Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a propeller shaft whose hollow shaft made of a FRP can itself absorb impact energy. SOLUTION: This propeller shaft 5 is provided with yokes 10 each of which has an end 12 fitted into the inner periphery of the end of a hollow shaft 7 made of a FRP, in such a way that the end 12 is engaged with the hollow shaft with respect to the direction of rotation and that in the direction of the axis it is allowed to be displaced at the application of more than a predetermined load; a taper part 9a serving as the starting point of destruction of the hollow shaft 7 is formed at each axial end of the hollow shaft 7, and a flange- shaped abutting part 15 is formed in each yoke 10 in such a way as to face the axial end face of the hollow shaft 7. When a compressive load is applied to the yoke 10, the axial end of the hollow shaft 7 first starts to break down, and destruction due to the enlargement of the yoke 10, induced by the breaking down of the axial end, progresses in the direction of the axis of the hollow shaft 7, thereby absorbing the impact energy applied.
