PURPOSE: To display an image with a simple structure by controlling selective passing and a passing quantity of emitting electrons of line shape cathodes in the vertical direction of an image screen by a scanning electrode and a data electrode, and deflecting them by a horizontal electrode.
CONSTITUTION: Line shape cathodes 7 are formed in the vertical direction of an image screen, and electrons are emitted from the whole body. A vertically scanning signal is added to a scanning electrode 8, and the electrons are passed selectively with every scanning line. In succession, a video signal is added to a data electrode 9, and an electron passing quantity is controlled. Next, the electrons are guided to object picture elements on a phosphor 21 by a deflecting electrode 10 according to a horizontally scanning signal. A phosphor 12 and an electron capturing anode electrode 11 are provided on a front panel 6, and a vacuum space is formed together with a back panel 1, and respective members are housed. In this constitution, the number of cathode parts becomes fewer than the number of picture elements, and since the deflecting electrode is only a horizontally deflecting electrode, a structure becomes simple.
