PURPOSE: To select the damping forces different in the extending side and in the contracting side simultaneously, and to prevent the generation of a strange sound in the extending and the contracting conditions, in a damping force regulating type hydraulic buffer.

CONSTITUTION: A piston 3 is installed in a cylinder 2, an extending side oil passage 10 and a contracting side oil passage 11 are provided on the piston 3, and disk valves 14 and 15 are provided to generate a damping force. An extending side bypass passage is provided along the dashed line arrow (1), it is communicated through the extending side chamber 17a of a shutter 17, and the oil of only the extending side is let flow by a check valve 28. A contracting side bypass is provide along the dashed line arrow (2), it is communicated through the contracting side chamber 17b of the shutter 17, and the oil of only the contracting side is let flow by a disk valve 30. The shutter 17 is rotated, a flow-in port 31 at the extending side and a flow-in opening 34, and a flow-in port 32 at the contracting side and a flow-in opening 33 are conformed so as to regulate the passage area of the extending and contracting bypass passages, and the damping forces different at the extending side and at the contracting side can be selected simultaneously. Since the extending side and the contracting side chambers 17a and 17b are independent, no turbulence and no strange sound are generated in the shutter 17 in the extending and the contracting conditions.
