PURPOSE: To improve the characteristics of a permanent magnet by orienting the axes of easy-magnetization of the constituent particles of the magnet substantially toward its surface of action from its side edges.
CONSTITUTION: A permanent magnet has a surface of action and adjacent edges. The axes of easy magnetization of constituent particles of the magnet are oriented along the magnetic lines of force from the adjacent edges to the surface of action. Lateral orientation is applied to a disc magnet by magnetization of particles along the axis of easy magnetization. When the magnet is attached to a ferromagnetic body, magnetic lines of force other than from the surface of action are those from the sides; that is, they are much fewer than in the case of a magnet of axial or converging orientation. Therefore, it is possible to enhance the flux at the surface of action of the magnet and increase the reach of magnetic lines of force.
