PURPOSE: To recover propylene oxide and tert. butyl alcohol by separating a reaction mixture formed by reacting propylene with tert. butyl hydroperoxide in a tert. butyl alcohol soln. in the presence of a soluble molybdenum catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The mixture of a lower aliphatic having 1-3C atom, of a 5-10 wt.% based on a heavy liq. distillation fraction and the heavy liq. distillation fraction are separated in a falling thin film type evaporator at 20-150°C and under 1-200 mmHg to obtain the fraction of a liq. residue contg. tert. butyl hydroperoxide, and tert. butyl alcohol or the like, and the top fraction of the evaporator consisting of 80-95 wt.% of the heavy distillation fraction and contg. 60-90 wt.% charged lower aliphatic alcohol and tert. butyl alcohol or the like, and the lower aliphatic alcohol is separated from the other components of the top fraction of the evaporator and the separated lower aliphatic alcohol is again recycled to the falling thin film type evaporator as the lower aliphatic alcohol.
