PURPOSE: To produce a tough slider at a low cost by forming a composite material in which one or more kinds of ceramic fibers, ceramic particles and ceramic whiskers are dispersed into an Al or Al alloy matrix.
CONSTITUTION: A tubular alumina short fiber preform (porous fibrous molded item) is set in a die and molten of Al-Si A4032 alloy is then poured through molten forging method and pressure solidified to form a billet 1. Thus formed billet 1 has outer peripheral part composed of composite material 2 of 10% alumina/A4032 alloy and internal part composed of A4032 alloy 3. The billet 1 is then extruded into a rod 4 having a rectangular cross-section which is then subjected to cutting and boring to produce a slider 5. According to the method, a slider having excellent current collecting performance and high abrasion resistance can be produced with low labor and material cost.
