PURPOSE: To reduce the peak power of a modulated radial beam between recording operations.
CONSTITUTION: In recording information in a carrier 1 having a recording layer 2, the layer 2 is scanned by a radial beam 71 in which radial power varies pulsatively. As a result of the heat generated by the radial pulse, the recording layer 2 is formed with optically detectable variation. A write signal generating circuit 78 converts an information signal v (t) to a write signal g (t) having a pulse pattern. This pulse pattern is provided with the pulse of a high signal level generating alternately with the pulse interval of a low signal level. A control circuit 79 sets the power of the radial beam 71 at a value determined by the write signal level. While the signal level inside the pulse decreases, the signal value of the write signal g (t) increases within the pulse interval. As a result, the influence of the immediately preceding radial pulse on the temperature of a scanning region 73 is compensated.
