PURPOSE: To obtain a new alkoxy benzene derivative capable of reducing the viscosity of a liquid crystal composition and also lowering a birefringence Δn and a threshold voltage Vth by compounding it to the liquid crystal composition and having excellent characteristics as a liquid crystal material.
CONSTITUTION: This alkoxybenzene derivative is expressed by formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl; X is a halogen or cyano; Y is a halogen or H; when Y is Cl, X is a halogen; when Y and X are F at the same time, R is 2-10C alkyl; when Y is H, X is a halogen and R is 2-10C alkyl; when Y is H and X is F, R is 2-4C alkyl), e.g. 4-methoxychlorobenzene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting an alkyl bromide of the formula R-Br with a substituted phenol of formula II in an aqueous alkaline solution followed by washing with water, drying and recrystallizing the reactional mixture.
