PURPOSE: To obtain the smoothness of the gap boundary and the uniformity of the gap length by superimposing a magnetic gap layer on an upper surface of an under magnetic layer being made smooth.
CONSTITUTION: The under magnetic layer 2 (Fe-Al-Si) on a supporting substrate 1 of ferrite, etc., superior to wear resistance is applied at about 10μm thick. By using colloidal SiO2 it is polished in liquid and the surface roughness is improved to a level of 0.006. On the magnetic layer 2, a specified thickness of SiO2 layer 6 is formed a multi-layered conductive coil 5 of Cr/Cu/Cr is formed with a specified pattern and winding number. An insulated layer 6 is superimposed and etched back and the surface is made smooth. Next the upper magnetic layer 4 (Fe-Al-Si)) is formed at about 10μm thickness and a specified pattern is formed. With this constitution, the control of the gap length becomes easy and the recording and reproducing characteristics in a high frequency band are improved.
