PURPOSE: To produce the ortho alkylphenol in a high yield and in a high conversion over a long time by reacting a phenolic compound with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst prepared from magnesium oxide particles having a specific average particle diameter.
CONSTITUTION: A phenolic compound having a hydrogen atom at its ortho position and a lower alcohol in a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:10 are reacted with each other in the presence of a catalyst at 300-500°C to produce the ortho alkyl phenol. The catalyst is prepared from fine manganese oxide particles having an average particle diameter of 1-10μm, preferably 1-5μm, produced by grinding manganese oxide usually having a particle diameter of approximately 50μm or from electrolyzed manganese dioxide used as an electrode material for batteries, especially the electrolyzed manganese dioxide (having a particle diameter of several μm) treated in a purification process.
