PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain the subject derivative useful, e.g. as an intermediate for an agrochemical in high purity and yield by reacting a specific carboxylic acid obtained from a specific phenolic compound as a starting material with a Lewis acid in an organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is a 1-2C alkyl or halogen; R2 is a 4-6C tertiary alkyl; M is alkali metal atom) is made to react with a compound of formula II (R3-R5 are each H or methyl; X is halogen, etc.,) in an organic solvent to obtain a compound of formula III. This compound is subjected to a rearrangement reaction in the presence of an organic solvent at a high temperature to obtain a compound of formula IV. Then, the resulting compound is reduced in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst in a solvent in a hydrogen atmosphere to obtain a compound of formula V. The reduced compound is made to reacted with a compound of the formula CH3 COX' (X' is halogen) in the presence of a Lewis acid in an organic solvent to obtain a compound of formula VI. The obtained compound is further made to react with a compound of the formula of MOX' in the presence of an alkali to obtain a compound of formula VII. Finally, the compound of formula VII is allowed to react with a Lewis acid in an organic solvent to obtain the objective derivative of formula VIII.
