PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst for the steam reforming of methanol having a high activity and high selectivity and greatly enhanced in heat resistance (durability).
CONSTITUTION: In the production of a catalyst for the steam reforming of methanol based on copper oxide, zinc oxide and aluminum oxide, an aq. soln. containing a water-soluble copper compd. and a water-soluble zinc compd. is dripped into alkali being a precipitant to form a sediment consisting of basic carbonate and/or hydroxide of copper and basic carbonate and/or hydroxide of zinc. This sediment is filtered, washed and, if desired, baked to prepare a compsn. consisting of at least one copper compd. selected from a group consisting of basic copaper carbonate, copper hydroxide and copper oxide and at least one zinc compd. selected from a group consisting of basic zinc carbonate, zinc hydroxide and zinc oxide. Next, this compsn. is mixed with alumina hydrate and the obtained mixture is baked and reduced.
