Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide the optical fiber coupler having no variance in its characteristic without generating a stress concentration in a fusion start point of the optical fiber coupler formed by fusion drawing. CONSTITUTION:In the optical fiber coupler in which with respect to plural coated optical fibers 1a, 1b placed in parallel, its middle part is subjected to fusion drawing and an optical coupling part 10 is formed, it is an optical fiber coupler in which at least a pair of fixed parts 20a, 20b of low melting point glass of a low thermal expansion coefficient are provided on both sides of the optical coupling part 10, and this optical fiber coupler is manufactured by a process for aligning and placing in parallel bare optical fibers 2a, 2b obtained by eliminating a jacket coat of the middle part of the coated optical fibers 1a, 1b, a process for providing fixed parts 20a, 20b by low melting point glass of a low thermal expansion coefficient on both sides of its parallel placing part, and a process for forming the optical coupling part 10 by executing fusion drawing to the middle part of the fixed part 20a, 20b by using a heating means.
