PURPOSE: To readily obtain a carbon/carbon composite material having high coefficient of friction and low abrasion and further stabilized in torque curve.
CONSTITUTION: A sheet in which fiber is randomly oriented two-dimensionally by defibrillating short fiber-like carbon fiber bundles consisting of plural single- fibers not substantially stuck with a collecting agent is prepared and the sheet is impregnated with a resin or pitch and laminated, molded, calcined, and then is impregnated with pitch and baked at a temperature not higher than final heat-treating temperature and these steps are repeated to produce the objective carbon fiber reinforced carbon composite material. In this composite material, the carbon fiber bundles are left as bundles and the final head treating temperature is ≤240°C and the final porosity is ≤10vol%.
