PURPOSE: To obtain the subject yarn not requiring infusibilizing, capable of reducing a free carbon content, comprising an aggregate of amorphous and crystalline particles composed of silicon, nitrogen and carbon as essential components and O, H, Al, B, Ti, Hf, Y, etc., as arbitrary components.
CONSTITUTION: A silicon-containing thermoplastic ceramic precursor and a perhydrosilazane are made into a thermosetting ceramic precursor block copolymer having 200-500,000 number-average molecular weight, which is dissolved in a solvent and subjected to dry spinning to give yarn. The yarn is burnt in a flow of Ar, N2, H2, etc., at 600-1,800°C and ceramic yarn is formed to give the objective silicon carbine yarn which comprises silicon, nitrogen and carbon as essential components and oxygen, hydrogen and metallic elements such as Al, B, Ti, Hf, Y, etc., as arbitrary components. This silicon carbide yarn is composed of an amorphous part or an aggregate made of the amorphous part and crystalline fine particles of β-SiC having ≤500 crystal particle diameter and has 1-20 times as mush X-ray small angle scattering intensity ratio as air at 1° and 0.5°, respectively.
