Abstract:

PURPOSE: To perform emission control over formaldehyde attending on combustion of alcohol fuel by means of a change of valve timing.

CONSTITUTION: This controller is provided with two valve timing variable mechanisms 18, 19 capable of changing at least one side on-off timing of an intake valve 14 and an exhaust valve 15 of an engine. Alcohol content in fuel is detected by a content detecting means 31, and there is provided a valve timing control means 20 which changes the valve timing to lengthen an overlap period, by way of example, so as to heighten a combustion temperature, in the valve timing variable mechanism according to an increase in the alcohol content.
