PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform luminance distribution irrelevantly to a view angle.
CONSTITUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a diffusion plate 5 which is laminated on one surface of a light guide plate 3. a reflecting plate 6 which is 1aminated on the other, and a light absorbing material 2 which has the density gradient of a gradual decrease in light absorptivity from the side of a cold cathode ray tube 4 arranged on the flank of the light guide plate 3 to an effective display area 7 nearby the cold cathode ray tube 4 and outside the effective display area 7. Therefore, the intensity of light which is directly reflected by a reflecting plate 6 from the cold cathode ray tube 4 and directed to a liquid crystal display element is given a gradient to suppress the generation of an irregularity in luminance at the time of an oblique look at the liquid crystal display device, thereby obtaining the uniform luminance distribution over the entire area of the effective display area.
