PURPOSE: To obtain a bioabsorbable suture, superior in flexibility and handling characteristics with excellent knot strength, knot retention and absorption characteristics, by copolymerizing a block comprising a glycolic acid ester unit as the predominant component with a block comprising a random copolymer containing 1,4-dioxan-2-one and 1,3-dioxan-2-one.
CONSTITUTION: A bioabsorbable suture is manufactured by copolymerizing (A) 50-80 wt.% glycolic acid ester unit with (B) 20-50 wt.% block comprising a random copolymer containing 35 wt.% 1,4-dioxan-2-one and 65 wt.% 1,3- dioxan-2-one to form a block copolymer. It is preferable in such a case that the block copolymer has ABA as a repeating block unit. The size 3/0 suture using the block copolymer has the properties that it has a maximum strain energy at 0-5% of 2.62 kg-mm and the same at 0-10% of 7.4 kg-mm, a knot- tensile strength of 2-3 kg and a straight-tensile strength of 3-5 kg.
