PURPOSE: To manufacture a roll for heat treating furnace having a high hardness, excellent in wear resistance and without slipping of a steel sheet to be transported by forming the thermally sprayed layer of zirconia ceramic contg. a hard chromium carbide on the surface of a roll base material made of heat resistant steel as the roll for heat treating furnace.

CONSTITUTION: As the roll which is used at a high temp. in the heat treating furnace of a continuous annealing furnace or the like for steel sheets, a furnace roll the main body of which is composed of the heat resistant steel and the surface of which contains the hard chromium carbide at the rate of 1-10wt.% and consists of the balance zirconia ceramics and which is hard, excellent in wear resistance, whose coefficient of friction with the steel sheet to be transported is high and from which the steel sheet is not slipped is developed.
