PURPOSE: To realize airtight sealing in an entire optical module by performing airtight sealing between an optical fiber array and a module package and to provide the optical module whose reliability is high and whose life is long.
CONSTITUTION: This optical module consists of the module package 11 holding a light emitting and receiving element 15, its peripheral circuit and an optical fiber for guiding light, and the optical fiber array 13 extended from the package 11. In order to attain the airtight sealing between the package 11 and the optical fiber array 13, a U-shaped groove 14 shallower than the diameter of the optical fiber is formed in the package 11 and the optical fiber to which surface treatment is performed is buried in the groove 14. Thus, the airtight sealing of the entire module package is attained.
