The nanocarbon material composite 1 consists of silicon oxide particles 2 and nanocarbon fibers 3 formed on the surface of the silicon oxide particles 2 directly or through a metal or metal compound. The electron emission element using a nanocarbon material composite comprises an electrically conductive layer disposed on a substrate and a nanocarbon material composite obtained by forming a nanocarbon material having a spiral structure and a fibrous nanocarbon material on a silicon oxide particle directly or through a metal or metal compound, wherein the nanocarbon material composite is disposed on the electrically conductive layer and emits electrons under a strong electric field. The surface-emitting element is manufactured using the electron emission element.
