To obtain a new compound, suitable as an electron transport agent and useful as an electrophotographic photoreceptor used in an apparatus for forming an image such as an electrostatic copier, a laser printer or a plain paper facsimile apparatus using the electron transport agent.
This compound is represented by formula I (R1 is an alkyl or an aryl; R2 is an alkyl, an aryl or represented by the formula O-R3; R3 is an alkyl or an aryl) and, e.g. 2-oxycarbonylethyl-3-phenyl-1,4-naphthoquinone is cited. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by reacting a 1,3-indanedione derivative represented by formula II with a bromoacetic ester represented by formula III, synthesizing an acetic ester derivative, then isomerizing the resultant acetic ester derivative in the presence of sodium hydride and further oxidizing the prepared isomer (when R2 is represented by the formula O-R3). The compound represented by formula I is good in solubility in solvents and compatibility with a binding resin. When the compound is used with a specific electron accepting compound having a specific redox potential in combination, the sensitivity of a photoreceptor can further be improved.
