NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula 1 (R is methyl or H), its reduced derivative, its monoacetyl derivative, and its oxidized derivative.
EXAMPLE: 8,9-Dimethoxy-1H-benzo[de][1,6]naphthyridine.
USE: It has sympatholytic action and is useful as a hypotensor, etc.
PROCESS: The compound of formula 1 can be prepared by homogenizing a sponge (Aaptos aaptos), extracting with a proper solvent, fractionating by chromatography, and recrystallizing with a solvent. The compound of formula 2 (a compound of formula 1 wherein R is methyl) is catalytically reduced in the presence of a catalyst such as platinum to obtain a novel reduced derivative of formula 5, which is acetylated with acetic anhydride in pyridine to the novel monoacetyl derivative of formula 6. The compound of formula 6 can be converted to the novel compound of formula 7 by ozone-oxidation followed by reduction with dimethyl sulfide, and further to the novel compound of formula 8 by repeating the above process.
