To obtain a long life lithium ion secondary battery which maintains high input/output characteristics with high capacity, and exhibits excellent cycle characteristics.
A negative electrode of a lithium ion secondary battery 12 contains a graphitic carbon material having two types of different particle shape where an amorphous carbon layer s is formed on the particle surface. Preferably, the graphitic carbon material has a first graphitic carbon material A having a spherical or an elliptic spherical particle shape where the amorphous carbon layer s is formed on the particle surface, and a second graphitic carbon material B having a polyhedral or polygonal aggregate particle shape where the amorphous carbon layer s is formed on the particle surface. The second graphitic carbon material B has a particle size and a specific surface area which are smaller than those of the first graphitic carbon material A.
