To provide a negative electrode material for a battery which is less apt to generates pulverization or dropping-out of an active material, when an active material layer is expanded and contracted by a large amount, at charging and discharging, and to provide a negative electrode for a battery that uses the negative electrode for a battery.
The negative electrode material 1 for the battery has resin particles 2 and the active material layer 3 for covering the surface 2a of the resin particle 2; a compressive elasticity rate (10%K value) of the resin particle 2 is 5-350 N/mm2; and a compressed deformation recovery rate of the resin particle 2 is 80% or more. The negative electrode 11 for a battery has a collector 12 and a negative electrode material layer 13 for a battery formed on the surface 12a of the collector 12, by using a plurality of negative electrode materials 1 for the battery.
